EGR COMPONENTS

The word EGR is an acronym for Exhaust Gas Recirculation, a method of reducting certain emissions that is used by many modern vehicle manufacturers. EGR involves recirculation some exhaust gasses back into the intake, usually after passing them through a cooler, in order to reduce the amount of oxygen in the combustion chamber, reducing combustion temperatures.

However this process can cause complications, particularly in older vehicles, as soot from the EGR combines with oil coming from the crank case breather (which is also vented into the intake), to form carbon deposits inside the inlet manifold, which causes a generally imperceptible, but steady loss of performance.

There are a number of ways to prevent this issue, including fitting a catch can to the crank case breather, fitting an EGR blanking plate which stops the flow of exhaust gasses, or removing the EGR all together. The last two options are intended for offroad use only.
