Toyota HiLux 4in Exhaust: DPF-Back or Turbo-Back?
DPF-back keeps your factory diesel particulate filter in place and is the simpler, more compliance-friendly option for most daily drivers. Turbo-back replaces the system from the turbo outlet itself, and depending on the configuration, trades some of that simplicity for more flow and more presence. Manta's new 4in HiLux range covers both, in five configurations. Here's how to tell which one is actually yours.
What's the real difference between DPF-back and turbo-back?
DPF-back starts behind the factory diesel particulate filter and leaves everything ahead of it untouched.
That matters for two reasons. Your emissions equipment stays exactly as Toyota built it, and the install is generally more straightforward because less of the factory system comes off.
Turbo-back goes further. It replaces the exhaust from the turbo outlet all the way to the tailpipe, which is the biggest single change you can make to a diesel exhaust.
More of the factory restriction comes out. More of the factory system comes off too.
Neither is better in every case. Which one is right depends on what you're actually doing with the truck.
What does WOM mean, and is it right for you?
WOM stands for without muffler. It's the loudest configuration in the range, because there's no muffler section to quieten the note down.
Think straight-through pipe, maximum flow, and a note that carries.
That's exactly what some owners want, particularly for a rig that lives off the black top. It's also more than most daily drivers want to listen to on a two hour commute, every single day.
Whether a WOM configuration is suited to road use depends on your state's rules and what the rest of that specific build retains. Worth confirming with the team before you commit to one.
What does a Hi-Flow Cat add to a turbo-back system?
A Hi-Flow Cat is a higher-flow catalytic converter, not a cat delete.
It still treats the exhaust gas. It just does it with less restriction than the factory unit, which is the difference between a turbo-back system that still carries emissions equipment and one that doesn't.
If you want most of what a turbo-back system offers without giving up as much on the compliance side, this is generally the direction to look. Confirm your exact configuration and state requirements with the team first.
Which configuration actually suits your HiLux?
Five configurations, five different jobs.
- 4in DPF Back. The daily driver's pick. Keeps the DPF, keeps things simple, still noticeably frees up the factory restriction.
- 4in Turbo Back with Muffler. More of the factory system opened up, muffler retained to keep the cabin liveable on a long haul.
- 4in Turbo Back with WOM. Maximum flow, maximum note. Best suited to a build that's not doing daily road miles.
- 4in Turbo Back with Muffler and Hi-Flow Cat. The most complete turbo-back package that still carries a catalytic converter, muffled for everyday driving.
- 4in Turbo Back with WOM and Hi-Flow Cat. All the flow of a WOM setup, with a Hi-Flow Cat still doing its job in the system.
Not sure if a muffled configuration will still be too much for daily highway driving? We've covered what causes exhaust drone and how to stop it in a separate guide, worth a read before you choose between muffled and WOM.
Picture this. Loaded up, corrugated track, sun dropping fast and still an hour from camp. What you want from the exhaust in that moment is completely different to what you want idling in the school pickup line on Tuesday.
The right configuration is the one built for the driving you actually do, not the one that sounds best in a video.

What's the difference between DPF-back and turbo-back exhaust?
DPF-back starts behind the factory diesel particulate filter and leaves it in place, which generally keeps the install simpler and closer to standard compliance. Turbo-back replaces the system from the turbo outlet, which frees up more flow but takes more of the factory system with it. Which one suits you depends on how you use the vehicle.
What does WOM mean on an exhaust system?
WOM stands for without muffler. It's the loudest configuration available, built for maximum flow with nothing to quieten the note. It suits builds that aren't doing daily road use more than it suits a regular commuter.
Does a Hi-Flow Cat mean the exhaust has no catalytic converter?
No. A Hi-Flow Cat is a higher-flow catalytic converter, not a delete. It still treats exhaust gas, just with less restriction than the factory unit, so it sits between a full turbo-back delete and a standard DPF-back setup.
Will the new HiLux exhaust drone at highway speed?
Manta systems are developed with the note tuned across the rev range rather than just turned up in volume, which is what generally keeps drone off the highway. If you want the full picture on what causes drone and how it's avoided, we've covered it in a separate guide.
When will the Manta 4in HiLux exhaust be available?
The range is close to release. Registering your interest is the fastest way to hear the moment it goes live, ahead of general release.
Is every configuration in this range road legal?
Depends on the configuration and your state. DPF-back retains the factory DPF and is generally the more straightforward option for road use. Some turbo-back configurations may suit off-road use only. Confirm with the team before you order if road use matters to you.
