How Much Does An Exhaust Lower EGTs And How Does It Do It?

Date: 17-05-2022

What causes high EGTs?

In simple terms, high EGTs are a result of a rich running condition in your diesel engine. This means that the engine is burning too much fuel relative to the amount of air it is getting. You may notice the effects of this as black smoke coming from your tailpipe. The solution is to get more air to flow through the engine, balancing out the rich condition.

Unfortunately, the act of adding fuel to boost performance in a diesel engine can lead to a rich running condition and high EGTs. Some solutions include larger turbos, water injection, and aftermarket intercoolers, but these tend to be very expensive upgrades.

Manta Performance can lower your EGTs without costing you a fortune!

A Manta Performance exhaust system is a great way to lower your vehicle’s EGTs and improve its performance. Your factory exhaust system is very restrictive – it’s like trying to run while breathing through a drinking straw! The larger pipe sizes used in a Manta system actually improve your engine’s breathing, bringing more air into the engine, relieving its rich running condition, and dropping its EGT significantly. You will see a massive difference, even during extreme conditions like towing uphill, running on the beach, and going flat out. Here’s a true story about one of our own vehicles:

  1. A Manta Performance exhaust system with 2.5-inch pipes was fitted to an otherwise stock and normally aspirated (NA) Nissan GQ Patrol. Its EGT dropped immediately.
  2. That same NA Nissan Patrol with 2.5-inch Manta system was upgraded with a turbocharger and tuned to run at a safe EGT level of 550°C.
  3. About six months later, the Manta exhaust system was switched to one with 3-inch pipes. With no other changes, the EGT dropped by 50°-70°C.
  4. A performance tune was done once more, which boosted the Patrol’s power while still keeping its EGT under the 550°C mark.

Every Manta Performance turbo-back 4WD exhaust system comes EGT gauge ready!

Manta Performance Pro Tip: Your EGT readings can vary, based on where your EGT/pyrometer gauge is connected relative to the turbo. If the gauge is taking readings from the turbo inlet, the temperature readings will be much higher than if the gauge is connected to the turbo outlet. This is because the EGT naturally drops by around 150°C as it passes through the turbocharger. While a safe reading at the turbo inlet is 700°C, a safe reading at the turbo outlet (where your gauge would be connected to your Manta system) will be 550°C, as mentioned above.

You get both higher performance and lower EGTs with a Manta Performance exhaust!

Adding a Manta Performance exhaust system and then tuning it accordingly gives you the best of both worlds. Your EGTs will drop as soon as you install it, then you can tune it by adding some fuel, getting more power output and still keeping it within the safety zone. That should give you all the performance you want – without any complicated and expensive hardware upgrades!
